Jim Douglas has hung up his racing helmet and now runs a driving school with Herbie as his star instructor. After Jim and Herbie stumble into a bank robbery and rescue a hostage, Jim meets Susan MacLane, a divorced mother of three, and Herbie's matchmaking instincts kick into high gear.

Across five hour-long episodes, Jim, Herbie and the MacLane kids, Julie, Matthew and Robbie, grow into a family. There are bumps along the way, including a motor vehicle inspection that Herbie meddles with so badly that the driving school is shut down, and a surprise visit from Jim's ex-girlfriend at his bachelor party. Lurking in the background is Randy Bigelow, Susan's jealous former fiancΓ©, who wants her back.

Randy's last-ditch plan is to kidnap Herbie and swap in a look-alike Beetle to ruin the wedding, but Herbie foils him and Jim and Susan are married. In the final episode, the newly expanded family considers trading up to a station wagon, giving Herbie a chance to prove that a little car can have room for a very big family.

What Herbie gets up to

The series shows a gentler, domestic Herbie. Instead of chasing trophies, he spends his time teaching student drivers, playing with the MacLane kids and protecting Jim's new romance from an envious rival. His matchmaking talent, first seen with Jim and Carole in The Love Bug, takes center stage, and the story arc closes with Herbie earning something he never had before: a whole family.
