Herbie Goes Bananas

On his way to a race in Brazil, Herbie befriends a young pickpocket and gets tangled up with a gang hunting lost Inca gold.

Jim Douglas's nephew Pete Stancheck has inherited Herbie and travels to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with his friend D.J. to collect the car and enter it in the Brazil Grand PrΓͺmio. Their wallets are promptly lifted by Paco, a quick-fingered orphan, who has also pickpocketed one of three crooks searching for forgotten Inca ruins. The crooks' wallet holds a roll of film that reveals where the gold is hidden, and suddenly everyone wants Paco.

Paco stows away under Herbie's hood and ends up aboard the cruise ship Sun Princess, bound for Rio. On board, Pete courts anthropology student Melissa in hopes that her flamboyant Aunt Louise will sponsor their race, while Paco and Herbie wreck the captain's costume party. The exasperated Captain Blythe has Herbie dropped into the sea and puts his passengers ashore in Panama.

A rusted Herbie resurfaces at the Panama Canal, where Paco revives him and the pair go into business as a taxi. The gold thieves close in, leading to escapes through a bullring, a disguise made of bananas and a showdown with the gang's airplane. With the villains arrested, a freshly restored Herbie heads for Brazil after all, this time with Paco as his driver.

What Herbie gets up to

Herbie spends much of this adventure as a fish out of water, quite literally after his trip to the ocean floor. His bond with Paco is the heart of the film, and Herbie clearly prefers the boy who believes in him over owners who see him only as a race car. He gets to show off some of his strangest skills here, from facing down a bull to taking a bite out of an airplane's tail, and he earns a new nickname, Ocho, thanks to some playful arithmetic on his number.
