Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo

Jim Douglas and Herbie come out of retirement for a Paris-to-Monte Carlo road race, only to find a stolen diamond in the gas tank and romance under the hood.

Jim Douglas is back behind the wheel, hoping for a comeback in the Trans-France Race, a cross-country run from Paris to Monte Carlo. Riding along is his twitchy, wisecracking mechanic Wheely Applegate. Their rivals include the arrogant German driver Bruno von Stickle and Diane Darcy, the only woman in the field, who drives a powder-blue Lancia Scorpion named Giselle. Herbie takes one look at Giselle and falls head over hubcaps.

The romance is not the only complication. A pair of bumbling jewel thieves, Max and Quincey, hide the priceless Étoile de Joie diamond in Herbie's fuel tank to dodge the police, then spend the rest of the film trying to get it back. Between the thieves, a suspicious police inspector, a lovestruck Beetle and Wheely's well-meaning lies about Giselle, Herbie starts the race from dead last.

When Diane and Giselle plunge into a lake, Herbie abandons the race to save them, and the rescue finally melts Diane's skepticism about cars with feelings. Back in contention, Herbie chases von Stickle through the streets of Monaco and takes the lead by driving upside down along the ceiling of the famous tunnel. After the win, the real mastermind of the heist is unmasked, and Herbie and Giselle watch fireworks over the harbor.

What Herbie gets up to

This is Herbie the romantic. His crush on Giselle drives the whole story: he shows off with donuts across the qualifying line, takes her on a date along the Seine and nearly throws away the race when he believes she has dumped him. He is also at his most heroic, choosing a rescue over a trophy without hesitation. The upside-down dash through the Monaco tunnel remains one of the most famous stunts in the entire series.
