Herbie: Fully Loaded
The youngest member of a racing dynasty finds a rusty Beetle in a junkyard and rides it all the way to a NASCAR victory lane.
After a string of lost races, Herbie is written off and hauled to a junkyard. That is where Maggie Peyton, the youngest member of a famous racing family, picks him out as a college graduation present from her father, Ray Peyton Sr. Herbie has other plans than a quiet life as a commuter car, and at a car show he maneuvers Maggie, disguised in an old racing suit, into an impromptu street race against NASCAR champion Trip Murphy. Herbie wins by a hair.
Maggie's father has forbidden her to race since a crash years earlier, but the win lights a fire. Trip, obsessed with the mysterious driver, sets up a rematch, and when Maggie agrees to race for pink slips with an eye on Trip's car, a jealous Herbie throws the race. Trip claims Herbie and enters him in a demolition derby to be destroyed, until Maggie runs onto the field, apologizes and the pair team up to win.
With the family team in financial trouble and her brother Ray Jr. sidelined, Maggie takes his place in a NASCAR Nextel Cup race. Herbie is boxed in, damaged and patched together with a part from a yellow New Beetle he has been admiring, but he refuses to quit. As Trip tries to put him into the wall and crashes himself, Herbie climbs the fence to clear the wreck and carries Maggie to victory.
What Herbie gets up to
The 2005 Herbie is more expressive than ever, using his headlights, bumper and doors to wink, frown and grin. He is still the proud, sensitive car of the original films: deeply loyal, wounded by Maggie's wandering attention and overjoyed when she comes back for him. The film also gives him plenty to prove, from street racing to a demolition derby to a full NASCAR field, and a happy ending of his own as he heads off on a date with a New Beetle.
